What is Indian Head Massage?

What is Indian Head Massage?

Massage is the oldest form of medicine known to humans and has been practiced for thousands of years.  The art of Indian Head Massage originated from Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine.  This Sanskrit word can be translated as the “science of life” or “knowledge of life”.  The Ayurvedic approach to health is the balance of body, mind and spirit and the promotion of long life.

Indian Head Massage,  also known as Champissage,  is a form of relaxation massage that focuses on the face,  head, neck and shoulders, which are important energy centers within the body.   It is very relaxing and has a balancing effect on the recipient as it helps them to release stress and tension creating a sense of peace and well being.  It can be done on its own or in conjunction with a full body relaxation massage.

What are some of the benefits of Indian Head Massage?

  •  General Relaxation
  •  Improved blood circulation increasing oxygen supply to the brain
  •  Calms, revitalizes and uplifts the spirit
  •  Can create a more balanced state of being
  •  Relaxes tight and hypertonic muscles, eases stiffness helps to ease knots in muscle tissues

As a precaution the following conditions cannot be treated or must be treated with care:

  • Any recent head or neck injury, including whiplash and concussion
  • Severe bruising in the areas to be treated
  • Epilepsy
  • Recent hemorrhage
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Migraine.  You should be aware that treatment may result in an attack
  • A history of thrombosis or embolism
  • Diabetes unless under control
  • Infectious skin disorders
  • Scalp infections
  • Cuts and abrasions in the treatment areas
  • Recent operation
  • Chronic Myalgic Encephalomyelitis
  • High temperature, illness and fever
  • Any infectious disease
  • Intoxication
  • Aneurosa
  • Food poisoning
  • Cancer or any other serious medical condition
  • Osteoporosis
  • Frailty
  • Chronic Fatigue Spondelites or Spondelosis

Pregnancy Massage with Prego Pillow

Here at Niagara Falls Massage Therapy and Wellness Centre we offer Pregnancy Massage with the comforting feel of the pregnancy pillow (prego pillow) which allows you to lay on your stomach, something that is not easily done in the 2-3 trimester. It helps to alleviate low back pressure while giving you the support required.

Along with the prego pillow, massage therapy addresses different needs through varying techniques, one of which is called Swedish Massage, which aims to relax muscle tension and improve lymphatic and blood circulation through mild pressure applied to various muscle groups of the body. Swedish Massage is the recommended prenatal massage method during pregnancy because it addresses many common discomforts associated with the skeletal and circulatory changes brought on by hormone shifts during pregnancy.

Massage Therapy performed during pregnancy can reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, and relieve muscle aches and joint pains, edema or swelling. Swelling is often caused by reduced circulation and increased pressure on the major blood vessels by the developing baby. Massage helps to stimulate soft tissues to reduce collection of fluids in the extremities, it also improves the removal of tissue waste, carried by the body’s lymph system.

Other potential benefits of prenatal massage:

  • Reduced back pain
  • Reduced joint pain
  • Improved circulation
  • Reduced edema
  • Reduced muscle tension and headaches
  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • Improved oxygenation of soft tissues and muscles
  • Better sleep

As with any therapeutic approach to pregnancy wellness, women should discuss massage with their prenatal care provider. The best way to address the risks of prenatal massage is to be informed and to work together with knowledgeable professionals.

Before giving a definition of Deep Tissue Massage, I first want to paint a picture of how the muscles appear in the body. I have found the easiest way to explain this is to visualize a layered meal (casserole, lasagna). You have multiple layers with different textures, so in the body our first layer is our skin, second layer (just below the skin, superficial) is our outermost muscles, the third layer (intermediate) is another muscle layer, then in some areas you have a fourth layer (deepest), then you come into contact with bone which most muscles attach to via tendons. I hope this allows a better understanding of muscles and how they are layered.

In using our meal example from above, aside from breaking the dish or taking the meal out of the bowl/pot, there is no way to get to the bottom layer without first going through or removing the top. This is similar to Deep Tissue Massage you cannot access the deeper (intrinsic) muscles without first softening the top muscles or as I refer to it as layering. So as you shorten the superficial muscles and get them to relax, it allows easier access to the next layer and then repeat with that muscle shorten and relax to access the deepest layer.

Deep Tissue Massage is not how hard can the Massage Therapist push/compress your muscles and how much you can tolerate. It is a technique used to accurately treat a specific muscle(s). Is there discomfort? Yes. Is there pain? No. If at any point you feel pain, this should be communicated to the Massage Therapist and appropriate action should be taken on their part. The NO PAIN, NO GAIN theory is an old school way of thinking (which I will discuss in my next blog).

Deep Tissue Massage is not for everyone, it is a form of precise treatment. If a complete massage was done with the Deep Tissue technique the client may actually injure further or have pain where pain didn’t exist before. The most common misunderstanding of Deep Tissue Massage is that it is a constant heavy pressure. This type of massage, where pressure is constant and fairly heavy is known as Petrissage, varying in pressure and contact surface from broad to narrow.
